Damos inicio con nuestra cobertura especial rumbo al certamen Miss Universo 2017, en esta ocasión llega la hora de tener en entrevista exclusiva a una joven graduada de Ingeniería industrial, que gracias a la universidad conoció los certámenes de belleza, coronándose y representando a su país, donde buscara en pocos días dar la tercera corona universal a Canadá, conozcamos a Lauren Howe.
Socialiteen: Agradecemos el tiempo que brindas para esta entrevista, de igual forma felicitarte por ser la representante de tu país, para iniciar coméntanos ¿Cómo se describe Lauren Howe?

How do you describe yourself?
Lauren Howe: Muchas gracias, para citar mi película favorita, soy como una caja de bombones: ¡nunca sabes lo que vas a conseguir! Estoy involucrado en una serie de mundos diferentes que la gente a menudo se sorprende al escuchar lo que hago. Como individuo, me describiría como aventurero, curioso y, con frecuencia, encantadoramente torpe. Me encanta aprender cosas nuevas que van desde deportes y ciencia hasta diferentes culturas de países e historias de personas. Esto probablemente explica cómo terminé estudiando ingeniería y trabajando en deportes profesionales al mismo tiempo
Thank you very much. To quote my favourite movie, I’m like a box of chocolates – you never know what you’re going to get! I’m involved in a number of different worlds that people are often surprised to hear what I do. As an individual, I would describe myself as being adventurous, curious and often charmingly awkward. I love to learn new things ranging from sports and science to different country cultures and individuals’ stories. This probably explains how I ended up studying engineering and working in professional sports at the same time.
Socialiteen: Haciendo una reflexión personal, ¿cuáles considerarías son tus habilidades y debilidades?
Lauren Howe: Una de las cosas que más me enorgullece es mi nivel de comodidad para conocer y hablar con extraños. Mi madre tiene un gran corazón y es muy sociable. Viajamos bastante juntos a medida que crecía y siempre había observado lo bien que se conectaba con personas que solo conocimos. Al estar cerca de ella en estos momentos, me gusta pensar que recogí algo de esta habilidad. Al ser del centro de Canadá, estoy orgulloso de poder surfear.
Debilidad: ¡A veces tengo la tendencia de agregar un poco demasiado a mi plato donde olvido tomarme tiempo para mis amigos y simplemente relajarme!
One strength I am most proud of is my level of comfort in meeting and speaking with strangers. My mother has a big heart and she is very outgoing. We traveled quite a bit together as I grew up and I had always observed how well she connected with people we just only met. By being around her in these moment, I like to think I picked up some of this skill.
Being from central Canada, I’m proud that I can surf.
Weakness: Sometimes I have a tendency to add just a little too much to my plate where I forget to take time for friends and simply relaxing!
Socialiteen: En tu tiempo libre, ¿Cuáles son tus hobbies?
Lauren Howe: Fotografía, videografía, boxeo, cualquier deporte de equipo (fútbol, baloncesto), senderismo con mis perros y viajes de aventura. ¡Me encanta explorar siempre partes únicas y remotas del mundo!
Photography, videography, boxing, any pick up team sport (soccer, basketball), hiking with my dogs and adventure travel. I love to always explore unique and remote parts of the world!
Socialiteen: Dentro del medio, ¿Quién consideras que es tu ejemplo a seguir y porque?
Lauren Howe: Tengo varios modelos y mentores. en términos de modelos conocidos, tengo mucho respeto por Angelina Jolie y Sheryl Sandburg. Angelina Jolie no solo es una persona talentosa, sino que también usó su plataforma y su voz para destacar los problemas más importantes del mundo. Sheryl Sandburg es una modelo profesional a seguir porque es una jugadora clave que ayuda a las mujeres a avanzar en el trabajo hacia la igualdad. Este es un problema cercano al corazón ya que he trabajado en industrias mayormente dominadas por hombres donde hay una falta de mujeres en el liderazgo. Espero ser parte de este movimiento de mis jóvenes inspiradoras para luchar contra estos estereotipos.
I have a number of role models and mentors. In terms of well known role models, I have a lot of respect for Angelina Jolie and Sheryl Sandburg. Angelina Jolie is not only a talented individual, but she also used her platform and her voice to highlight key issues in the world. Sheryl Sandburg is a professional role model of mine because she is a key player helping move women forward in the workplace towards equality. This is an issue close to the heart since I have worked in mostly male-dominated industries where there is a lack of females in leadership. I hope to be a part of this movement my inspiring young women to battle against these stereotypes.
Socialiteen: ¿Qué consideras que te motiva en la vida?
What do you motivate?
Lauren Howe: Estoy motivada por ideas y conceptos que pueden tener un impacto duradero en nuestro mundo. Me atrajo la ingeniería en parte porque te proporciona las habilidades que necesitas para encontrar soluciones que pueden cambiar el mundo que te rodea. La idea de lo imposible y decir que sí a ese desafío que supera eso es increíblemente motivador para mí.
I am motivated by ideas and concepts that can have a lasting impact in our world. I was drawn to engineering partly because it provided you with the skills you need to come up with solutions that can change the world around ya. The idea of the impossible and saying yes to that challenge which overcomes that is incredibly motivating to me.
Socialiteen: ¿Qué estudiaste o te gustaría estudiar? What do you study? Or what would you like to study and why?
Lauren Howe: Estudié Ingeniería Industrial en la Universidad de Toronto, es un tipo de ingeniería que se centra en los sistemas, la optimización y la interacción de las personas con estos sistemas. Empecé en Ingeniería Biomédica pero decidí cambiar a este programa porque podría ser aplicado en una variedad de Industrias y me intrigó estudiar la idea de «cómo mejorar las cosas». Por ejemplo, cómo optimizar los tiempos de espera en las salas de hospital, el tráfico en áreas de alta densidad o el diseño de productos que se adaptan a nuestras necesidades.
I studied Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto. It’s a type of engineering that is focused on systems, optimization and the interaction of people with these systems. I started in Biomedical Engineering but chose to switch to this program because it could be a applied in a range of Industries and it intrigued me to study the idea of «how to make things better». For example, how to optimize wait times in hospital rooms, traffic in high density areas or designing products that are tailored to our needs.
Socialiteen: A pesar de tu juventud, ¿Cómo te visualizas a futuro? / What is your vision for the future in your life?
Lauren Howe: Tengo algunas visiones para el futuro, tanto a corto como a largo plazo. Mi objetivo final es haber construido una empresa multinacional exitosa desde cero y asegurarme de que la compañía siempre esté devolviendo a las comunidades necesitadas a través de una fundación hermana.
I have a few visions for the future, both short term and long term. My ultimate goal is to have built a successful multi-national company from the ground up and ensure that the company is always giving back to communities in need through a sister foundation.

Socialiteen: Platícanos un poco, ¿Cómo fue el acercamiento a los certámenes de belleza? / How was your approach to beauty competitions?
Lauren Howe: Estaba buscando becas en mi último año de escuela secundaria y me enviaron un artículo que hablaba sobre una adolescente que ganó una beca a través de concursos. ¡Probé para Miss Teen Canada sin tener idea de qué esperar y unos meses más tarde terminé ganando! Me encanta la red de apoyo que tiene la comunidad y muchas de las mujeres que he conocido han seguido siendo buenas amigas hasta el día de hoy.
I was looking for scholarships in my final year of high school and I was sent an article that talked about a teen who won a scholarship through pageants. I tried out for Miss Teen Canada having no idea what to expect and a few months later I ended up winning! I feel in love with the supportive network that the community has and many of the women I have met have remained good friends to this day.
Socialiteen: Entrando un poco más al tema, ¿Cómo te conviertes en la representante de tu país en Miss Universo? / How did you begin the beauty’s contestant in Miss Universe?
Lauren Howe: Competir en Miss Universo Canadá parecía un paso natural después de pasar por la corona como Miss Teen Canadá. Competí en 2014 y obtuve el segundo lugar, pero estoy increíblemente agradecida de que no haya ganado en este momento. He crecido enormemente en esos tres años que este es el momento adecuado para representar a Canadá en Miss Universo. Ha sido un sueño mío desde niña cuando miraba el programa con mi madre y no creo que la realidad se haya hundido todavía. ¡Estoy emocionada!
Competing at Miss Universe Canada seemed like a natural next step after passing over the crown as Miss Teen Canada. I competed in 2014 and placed 2nd runner up, but I am incredibly grateful that I didn’t win at this time. I have grown tremendously in those three years that I this is the right time to represent Canada at Miss Universe. It’s been a dream of mine since a child watching the show with my mother and I don’t think the reality of it has sunk in yet. I’m thrilled!
Socialiteen: Nos podrías compartir ¿Cómo ha sido tu preparación rumbo al certamen? / How have you been training to performance in the contest?
Lauren Howe: Apenas gané el 7 de octubre, así que definitivamente tuvimos que comenzar a entrenar sin juegos, realmente parece una continuación de mi preparación para Miss Universo Canadá, solo en otra escala mayor. Estoy increíblemente agradecida con el increíble equipo que ha estado detrás de mí durante este tiempo. Me siento lista
I only won on October 7th so we definitely had to hit the ground running on training (no pun intended). It really just feels like a continuation of my preparation for Miss Universe Canada, just on another scale. I am incredibly grateful to the amazing team that has been behind me during this time. I feel ready.
Socialiteen: ¿Qué esperas de Miss Universo? / What do you expect from Miss Universe?
Lauren Howe: Esta es una oportunidad única en la vida. Espero conocer mujeres de todo el mundo que son increíblemente inspiradoras. No importa el resultado de la competencia, ¡aún necesito disfrutar el viaje!
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I am expecting to get to know women from around the world who are all incredibly inspiring. No matter the outcome of the competition, you still need to enjoy the journey!
Socialiteen: ¿Qué harías si te nombraran Miss Universo 2017? / What would you do if you were named Miss Universe 2017?
Lauren Howe: Hay varias cosas que me gustaría hacer si me coronaran Miss Universo 2017. Un ejemplo es que quiero iniciar conversaciones y programas que ayuden a alentar y empoderar a las mujeres jóvenes para que exploren y crezcan en los campos de STEM (ciencia, tecnología, matemática e ingeniería), también tengo un proyecto global específico que tengo en mente, pero estoy manteniendo esto en secreto por ahora.
There are a number of things I would like to do if I were named Miss Universe 2017. One example is that I want to start conversations and programs that help encourage and empower young women to explore and grow in STEM fields (science technology math and engineering). I also have a specific global project I have in mind but am keeping this a secret for now ;).
Socialiteen: ¿Qué planes tienes después de participar en Miss Universo 2017? / What plans do you have after participating in Miss Universe 2017?
Lauren Howe: Mucho de esto depende del resultado de Miss Universo. Ciertamente estoy buscando lanzar una aplicación financiera que actualmente estoy programando, una serie digital y continuar abogando por las mujeres en STEM. ¡Manténganse al tanto!
Much of this depends on the outcome of Miss Universe. I am certainly looking to launch a financial application which I am currently programming, a digital series and continue to advocate for women in STEM. Stay tuned!
Socialiteen: ¿Qué recomendaría a las mujeres que desean participar en un concurso de belleza o modelaje? / What would you recommend to young women who wish to participate in beauty pageant or modeling?
Lauren Howe: Recuerda que las bellas imágenes que a menudo ves públicamente son producto de maquillaje profesional, peinado, iluminación y fotografía. «La comparación es la muerte de la felicidad». Nunca serás otra persona y nunca serán tú. Ama y abraza quién eres tú, continúa tu educación y tus estudios. Tendrás esto por el resto de tu vida y nadie puede quitarte eso.
Remember that beautiful images you often see publicly are a product of professional hair, makeup, styling, lighting and photography. Every single woman is beautiful. No questions asked.
‘Comparison is the death of happiness’. You’ll never be someone else and they will never be you. Love and embrace who you. Keep up your education and your studies. You will have this for the rest of your life and no one can take that from you.
Socialiteen: Para culminar la entrevista ¿Algún mensaje que quieras dar a nuestros lectores y seguidores? / Any message you want to give our readers and your followers?
Lauren Howe: Nunca dejen de aprender y digan sí a las oportunidades (inteligentes) que podrían ser diferentes y que le asustarán inicialmente. ¡Así es como crecemos y nunca sabes dónde te llevará por el camino! Yo no sería Miss Universo Canadá si no dijera que sí a entrar a Miss Teen Canada hace años cuando eso estaba fuera de mi zona de confort.
Never stop learning and say yes to (smart) opportunities that might be different and scare you initially. This is how we grow and you never know where it will take you down the road! I wouldn’t be Miss Universe Canada if I didn’t say yes to entering Miss Teen Canada years ago when that was outside my comfort zone.
